It only matters if you make it matter.

On Feb 1st-2009, like most football fans I turned the television on and tunned into the super bowl game between the Cardinals and the Steelers!
From the get go of the season, in my heart and in my mind, I knew the Steelers had it. My intuition was bang on too.
Now here is the kicker, even though I knew they were set to take the tittle, I still felt a little shaky during the game when certain questionable plays were made, and inside kept saying to myself "I know the Steelers got it", and I knew they did, but yet I still allowed myself to get upset when it was clear they were losing.

At the end of the 4th quarter, with only 43 seconds left on the clock, and the cardinals clearly winning, I became even more confused wondering how I could have been so mistaken about who the winner would be. I kept making such a big deal about the score, without taking into consideration that 43 seconds on the clock, could make a huge difference on the field, and it did.
The Steelers made a touchdown with only 43 seconds left on the clock, and the score made enough difference for the Steelers to Steel the game away, and man oh man it was big! I jumped up, arms in the air, voice on high, and yelled "yes, yes, yes"!

That's when my friend said "Cerise, why are you so excited they won? You knew the steelers would win it, you been predicting this since the beginning of the season."
I replied "Yes I know, but they were losing just now, and i got nervous because the last quarter matters when the score is so tight."

Thats when my friend said "When you know the truth, the other stuff that happens in between only matters when you make it matter."

And that answer alone hit me like a tonne of bricks. My wise friend was right. Why did i make it matter? I knew what my intuition was telling me throughout the season. I knew for months the Steelers were going to take it all, so why did I allow myself to get so anxious during the game???? Why? Just because it appeared that the Cardinals had it, it did not mean it was so. Nevertheless I unknowingly gave the matter power, thus causing it to affect me negatively. Even though I knew the truth, I still allowed the rush of the moment to blind sight me, and silence my own inner voice.
Moreover, during the progression of the game, the emotions I experienced when it seemed as if the Cardinals may win, were uncomfortable to say the least.
So now here I was guilty as charged, like most others, I allowed the moment to matter more than the truth itself. But after digesting the situation, I realized something very valuable, something that will help me in my everyday life experiences. This lesson was this; go with flow, but don't get swept up in the moment, otherwise you just might make things matter that really aren't important at all.
